About Us

Gulval Farm Cottages - About Us

Gulval Farm Cottages and Top Orchard Nursery belong to the Matthews family who have lived and farmed in Gulval for at least eight generations. Originally, we were traditional market gardeners growing potatoes, cauliflower, cabbage and flowers in a stretch of land known as the golden mile. As the name suggests the land is incredibly fertile. With a south-facing aspect that yields early and bounteous crops. We still grow some flowers and early potatoes which we harvest and grade by hand on the nursery.

We have converted one of our barns that was once our flower pack-house. Turning it into two large, eco-friendly and luxurious holiday cottages. This barn was also once used as the site of our florist shop, Buds to Bloom. From where we sent our beautiful bouquets of Cornish Lilies and mixed flower bouquets by courier to customers all over the country.

LOCAL HISTORY

The West Penwith or Land’s End Peninsular is filled with spectacular historical and ancient sites. There are around 800 archaeological monuments within its 87 square miles. With many more that are known to have existed.

About 3 miles across the fields and up on to the moor, past Kenegie Manor is the ancient village of Chysauster. Built perhaps as early as 100BC, and lived in to around 300AD. Some of the walls of these incredibly unique courtyard houses (found only in West Cornwall) are 2 metres high.

Penzance is the birth place of the famous chemist and inventor, Sir Humphry Davy. He invented the safety lamp in 1815 for the dominant Cornish industry of mining, which dates back to the early Bronze Age. Engine houses, adits and shafts are a lasting legacy of this trade and a common sight across the landscape.

Cornwall is also home to the famous Newlyn School of Artists with selected artworks on display at Penlee House Gallery and Museum, in Penzance. Near-by St Ives has a great number of art galleries and studios to explore. Including The Tate, Leach Pottery and the Barbara Hepworth Museum.
